Before Whitening Your Teeth

Before whitening your teeth, we need to make sure other underlying issues don't exist. We will perform an examination and may x-ray your teeth to determine if there are any potential problems. Then we will clean your teeth and take a digital photo to assess the progress and final results of the whitening treatment.

We offer a couple of whitening treatments that you can discuss with our dentist. Our in-office treatment is a viable option if you want professional results quickly. The procedure is fairly simple and will take between 30 and 90 minutes. Your dentist may want you to visit the office one or two more times, depending on the severity of discoloration and desired results. A protective material is applied to the gums before any whitening gel is used. The gel itself contains hydrogen peroxide and is applied directly to the tooth's surface. A special light or laser is used to activate the gel, allowing the whitening process to occur more quickly.

In-Home Teeth Whitening Treatments

In-home treatments are another option that cost less and offer the convenience of whitening your teeth at home. However, the gel used is typically not as strong as the gel used by our dentists and you don't have the added benefit of using the activating light. The in-home method requires you use a tray with gel a few hours a day for a week or two. Our dentist will take an impression of your upper and lower teeth to create a tray that fits your mouth specifically. We'll also provide you with the whitening gel.

Over-The-Counter Teeth Whitening Treatments

Over-the-counter whitening kits or toothpastes are available in most stores. But the gel used in those kits are usually weaker. Also, the trays usually don't offer the snug fit to your teeth required to keep the gel in direct contact with your teeth.

Some people have noticed their teeth are sensitive after a whitening treatment. This typically subsides after a couple of days. During this time your dentist may recommend you use a toothpaste specifically for sensitive teeth. Whitening is not permanent, but with the proper oral care can last up to 6 months or longer before another treatment is necessary.
