It is always important to protect your teeth from decay, damage and staining, but when you have composite fillings, there are some extra precautions you should be taking to make sure that they last as long as possible.
Caring For Your Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are tooth colored fillings made from resin. They have quickly become the most preferred option for patients who need to have a cavity filled due to the fact that they are colored to match your natural tooth. If you choose to have a composite filling instead of a traditional silver filling, please be aware that composite fillings last approximately 7 years and traditional fillings usually last between 11 to 15 years. With extra care you can ensure that your composite fillings will not need to be prematurely replaced.
If you use tobacco products or consume high staining foods and drinks such as soft drinks, coffee, tea or alcohol, you should also be aware of the fact that while your teeth may become stained, your composite fillings will remain close to the same shade that they were when they were applied. This can cause your teeth to appear mismatched to the fillings.
Proper care of your fillings includes regular checkups with our office for cleanings and inspections as well as proper care at home. Composite fillings can shrink over time, and an exam will help us monitor any changes in the filling. If the filling does become loose, it will need to be replaced right away to avoid any further decay or damage.
Brushing twice per day with mildly abrasive toothpaste will help you keep your teeth white, and do not underestimate the importance of flossing! Maintaining your beautiful smile is work, but it is worth the effort for a strong and healthy mouth.
