Sinus Lift

Older woman in chair with doctor and X-rayDental implants can help someone who is missing one or more teeth. An implant is an artificial tooth that is held in place using a screw. That screw becomes the root of the artificial tooth, and then a crown is placed on top. It is a great way to have a permanent tooth once again. The problem is that sometimes there is not enough bone for the dental implant. That does not mean that you will not be able to replace the missing tooth. Here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry, there are different things that we can do if someone does not have enough bone for a dental implant. One of those procedures is known as a sinus lift.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift sounds like it is a scary procedure, but there is nothing to fear. Here is what you need to know about a sinus lift.

Before we explain what a sinus lift is, we should talk about why it might be needed. When a person needs a dental implant, there needs to be a certain amount of bone so that the implant will take. When you lose a tooth, you will eventually lose bone as well. If there is not enough bone, we will need to do something about it. If you need the implant or implants on the top teeth, especially a molar, we might do a sinus lift if there is not enough bone.

With a sinus lift, we will need to perform a bone graft for the bone on your top jaw. To do that, we will also need to "lift" your sinuses so that there is enough room for the new bone. A sinus lift is also sometimes called a sinus augmentation. It is not an uncommon procedure.

In many cases, we will do the sinus lift a few weeks before the first step of the dental implant. This will give your mouth time to heal and your jaw a chance to accept the bone graft. There are some cases, though, when we will do the sinus lift on the same day that we take care of the first step of the dental implants.

How Can It Help With Dental Implants?

With a sinus lift, you will end up with the correct amount of bone so that you will be able to have the implant. After the procedure, try not to sneeze if you can help it. You will also not want to blow your nose with force. We may prescribe something so that you will avoid getting congested. Some swelling may occur at first, and there could be some bleeding. We will give you other instructions for care after the procedure.

A sinus lift can be the first step to replacing a tooth. Dental implants can take several weeks to heal, so you will need to know that you have time before we go ahead with it. Here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry, we want to replace your missing teeth. Call us at (312) 757-6434 if you would like to have more information.
