Gum Disease

Diagram of periodontitis and health toothYou have probably seen plenty of commercials on television where one or more people are talking about gum disease. You know that it is bad. Do you know what gum disease is? How about what you need to do to prevent gum disease? Here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry, we want to do our part to make sure that your gums are healthy, but we cannot do it if you do not also take care of your gums at home.

What Do You Need to Know About Gum Disease?

Gum disease is more than just slightly swollen gums from time to time and maybe finding a small amount of blood when you brush your teeth. Gum disease is something that you need to take seriously for not only your oral health but also your overall health.

You might know that gum disease can lead to tooth loss, but that is not all. Gum disease can be a contributing factor in a heart attack, stroke, and even cancer. It is important that you take care of your gums.

The best way to prevent gum disease is to develop proper habits at home. It would help if you brush after meals and also before you go to bed. It would help if you also flossed, but do it gently because you do not want to hurt your gums while you are flossing. Mouthwash with fluoride is also something that should be part of your routine. If you smoke, you need to quit.

Even people who follow these steps can end up with gum disease. If your gums bleed, this could be a sign. The bleeding could be while you are brushing your teeth, but it does not have to be. If your gums are unusually red or they are swollen, it could be gum disease. Bad breath is another sign. If one or more teeth feels loose, that is another symptom of gum disease. If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, come to see us immediately.

Also, remember that you need to see us on a regular schedule anyway. When you are here, we will examine your gums. We will also clean your teeth and your gums to remove plaque and other things that could lead to decay. From there, we will decide what should be done about gum disease. Since each patient is different, there is no one size fits all treatment.

Since brushing your teeth is the first line of defense when it comes to good oral health, you need to make sure that you use the right toothbrush. Find one that has a head that is made of soft bristles. If you have a medium or hard toothbrush, you could damage your gums, which might also lead to bleeding.

Here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry, we want to take care of small problems before they become big problems. That is why you need to come at the moment you see a sign of gum disease. Call (312) 757-6434 to make the appointment. Your oral health, as well as your overall health, depends on it.
