Biomimetic Dentistry means that we are trying to mimic, or stay as close to, your natural biological oral health process. We believe that our bodies know best what to do, we merely enhance and assist it to do its normal function. How can we tell hundreds of thousands of years of evolution that we know better? At Taglia Advanced Dentistry, we will provide education, along with the tips and tools to have better oral health.
The Biomimetic Advantage
We work to imitate what nature has already designed. Biomimetic Dentistry is a conservative approach to dentistry where we seek to strengthen and enhance your natural teeth versus dramatic intervention. Increasingly, dental offices around the world are taking note of the advantages to Biomimetic care, and we would love to show you what we already know.
Biomimetic Alternative Dental Treatment
||Cavities and Fillings: Biomimetic care recognizes that bacteria and disease can attack the tooth. The difference is in our approach to removing and sealing. We strive to remove as little of the natural tooth as possible. Once clean, we can then seal the tooth removing any remaining bacteria from its source of food and oxygen.
||Crowns: Dental crowns have their place in all dentistry. They are used to surround and protect a weakened or damaged tooth. In Biomimetic care you may see more partial crowns, known as inlays and onlays, versus full crowns. We strive to repair only the damaged portion, leaving as much of the natural tooth intact as possible.
||Root Canals: Root canal therapy is a necessary procedure to save a tooth when the inside portion of the tooth has become diseased. The Biomimetic difference is the desire to maintain the nerve inside. We will remove much of the infected portion and then seal the nerve, maintaining it and sealing it. This process should remove the food and oxygen needed to keep bacteria alive, forcing it to go dormant or even die. Keeping the nerve is what nature intended.
History of Biomimetics
Biomimetic dentistry is a theory that has been around since the 1950’s but has recently gained considerable momentum. Increasingly, patients are seeking a more natural approach, and we can understand why. After all, why would we think artificial materials and procedures can be better than what nature has already designed?
Our mouths are a type of machine, with precise parts and mechanisms that work together in a function. Our jaw bone relies on our teeth for structure and strength, and our teeth rely on our jaw bone for stability. Interfering with this system can have a cascade of negative effects. At Taglia Advanced Dentistry, our goal is to enhance what nature has already provided without interfering. We simply want to educate and help nature do what evolution has designed.
