Does the Type of Fat You Consume Dictate Your Risk of Oral Issues?

It's common knowledge these days that consuming fat these days is definitely part of a healthy diet. The body needs fat for a variety of functions – to properly absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K, for example. And because vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, if your body cannot absorb vitamin D, then it won't be able to absorb calcium, and without calcium, your bones and teeth can weaken. But that doesn't mean you should pull into that doughnut shop after all. As ever, you need to be sure you are eating the right kinds of fat. The Good and the Bad The good fats you want to consume are the monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and omega-3 fatty acids. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can be found in canola oil, olive oil, corn oil, safflower oil, peanut oil, and sunflower oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines, and herrings, and in plant products such as walnuts, butternuts, ground flaxseed, and canola and soybean oil. Limit saturated fats – from meat and dairy products - and avoid trans fats – used in food processing, so skip those Oreo's. How it Affects Your Mouth Because trans fats are found in processed and sugary foods like pre-packaged cookies, cake mixes, pastries, doughnuts, and pie crusts, they can be part of a primary cause of cavities in teeth. But trans fats are also found in French fries, margarine, fried foods, and even non-dairy creamer. Consuming any of these foods may not mean consuming quite so much sugar, but it will mean consuming the kind of fat that does not help absorb vitamins and calcium, and so its effects are longer term, and more invisible. But unhealthy nonetheless. Your fat consumption's effect on your oral health tends to be indirect compared to its effect on other health issues, such as cholesterol levels.
